High as the Heavens

A British nurse in WWI German-occupied Brussels, Evelyn Marche spends her days at the hospital and her nights working at a café . . . or so it seems. Eve’s most carefully guarded secret is that she also spends her nights carrying out dangerous missions as a spy for a Belgian resistance group.

When a plane crashes as she’s en route to a rendezvous, Eve is the first to reach the downed plane and is shocked to recognize the badly injured pilot as British RFC Captain Simon Forrester. She risks her life to conceal him from the Germans, but as the secrets between them grow and the danger mounts, can they still hope to make it out of Belgium alive?

Questions about Kate’s Story

What inspired your story?

I love weaving intrigue into my stories and began writing about WWI espionage in my previous novel, Not By Sight. With my newest novel, High As The Heavens, I went deeper into the underworld of spies, exploring Belgian resistance groups that collaborated with British Intelligence to defeat the Germans during the Great War. Spiritually, I felt called to write about forgiveness and the struggle to reconcile after the atrocities of war; how guilt and despair oftentimes act as stumbling blocks to receiving God’s mercy and finding peace.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I especially loved writing the chapters that describe the relationship that develops between Simon and Eve back in Britain and Scotland before the war.

What character in your book turned out to be your favorite?

My favorite character is my heroine, Eve Marche. She’s a nurse by day, a waitress by night, and a spy for the Belgian underground in German-occupied Brussels. Eve is tough, exceptionally clever and brave, and I styled her character after some amazing real-life Belgian heroines of WWI!
